So you have decided to finally take the bull by the horns and find a solution to your hair loss that will give you hair for years to come. You have probably used a few hair loss remedies, with not very good results I am sure, and now you have decided it is time to get real results. More than likely, if you have hair loss at the front of the (receding hair line) or on the crown (bald spot) you are suffering from Male Pattern Baldness. This is a genetically derived condition with the medical name Androgenic Alopecia.
Androgenic alopecia can be passed down from either side of your family. The genes can come from your mother, you father, or both. It used to be believed that the genes were only transmitted along the mother's family line but that has now been proven erroneous. These genes cause a reaction in the body in which a naturally occurring hormonal substance called DHT attacks the hair follicles and causes them to stop producing hair. At this point, the only option is to replace those dead follicles which ones that are still growing.
Hair grafts, also called hair transplants, have been used for decades to treat male pattern baldness. Basically a hair restoration surgeon will remove living hair follicles from the back of a man's head and place them into the balding area. New techniques now allow this to be a fairly simple procedure that can be done in the doctor's office usually within one day.
Using the new processes that have been perfected, the surgeon now can remove the hair follicles and supporting members directly from the scalp without any incision. The insertion process has also been perfected to the point that the hairs can be implanted into very small openings in the skin at the balding area. These two facts mean there is very little discomfort and the healing process is quite quick.
In order to get the best results there are a few tips to follow after the surgery. One, be very careful of pulling out the follicles until they have connected fully in the scalp. Do not comb the hairs as this can pull them out. Two, do not shampoo for a few days and then when you do be very gentle. Within a few weeks the follicles have usually rooted and the hair can be treated normally.
Your doctor will probably recommend a hair growth supplement such as Minoxidil to apply to the scalp daily which will help to keep the surrounding hair healthy.
