Effective Home Remedies For Hair Loss

Remedies for hair loss have been tried by men for years as a way to get hair growing on a bald spot or to keep what hair they still have. As our population continues to age this is becoming more and more of a problem. To a certain extent, you can take comfort in the fact that men have been losing their hair probably since the beginning of time. In fact a recent discovery in a tomb from Ancient Egyptian times lists a hair loss remedy that was tried on the owner of the tomb. This has been dated at over 5000 years ago.

Luckily, medical research is starting to be applied to natural remedies for hair thinning and balding with good information being obtained. One of the most exciting discoveries is a natural occurring plant from the South East coast of the US. This plant, the saw palmetto, is a three foot tall palm bush that the local people have known about for centuries. The number one medicinal property of the saw palmetto has been its ability to treat male urinary tract problems. Interestingly enough, this is also what the number one hair loss drug in the US, Finasteride, was also developed for. During clinical trials for men with enlarged prostate who were on this drug the men with male pattern baldness noticed a positive change in their hair loss. Further sturdy indicated that Finasteride was effective at slowing and treating male pattern baldness. It appears that this is done by limiting the production of a hormonal metabolite known as DHT or dihydrotestosterone. This substance apparently bonds with receptors on the hair follicles and slowly chokes off their life. As the follicle is attacked it produces less and less keratin which is what the hair shaft is made of. The shaft gets thinner and thinner until it can no longer support itself resulting in it breaking off and falling out.

Saw palmetto apparently causes the same results as Finasteride. It also was used to treat enlarged prostate but men all over the world are finding it has hair treatment properties also. It is usually taken orally in an extract form and can be found in most health food stores, the health aisle in grocery stores, and online.

Another natural remedy that shows promise is Stingy Nettle Root. Studies are progressing on this natural treatment also and seem promising. It appears to have the same action as the other natural home remedy Saw Palmetto.
